Caribbean Development Bank Scholarship (Nov. 28, 2022)

To further CDB’s support of procurement capacity building in the Caribbean and to develop the strategic design and utilisation of public procurement, CDB is pleased to offer, through technical assistance funds provided by the Government of the Republic of Italy, a scholarship for a candidate to complete the International Master in Public Procurement  at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. The programme runs from March 2023 to February 2024.  The selected candidate would be required to be based in Rome for a period of 4.25 months.

2022 Call for Nominations for the H.S.A. Board (Nov. 7, 2022)

The members of the Board of Directors of the Haitian Studies Association are elected by the general membership by electronic balloting and serve a three-year term. Board members can be re-elected for additional terms. The Board is composed of elected members (including a student representative), and advisory members who, in turn, elect the officers of the board. The elected officers of the Board of Directors are the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Advisory Board is comprised of the current Executive Director, the immediate Past President, and the Editor of the Journal of Haitian Studies (JOHS). Collectively, these members are the governing body of the Haitian Studies Association. 

Middlebury College – Assistant Professor of French & Francophone Studies (Nov. 1, 2022)

The Lois ’51 and J. Harvey Watson Department of French and Francophone Studies invites applicants for a full-time tenure track position in the field of pre-1900 literature and culture beginning fall 2023. The successful candidate’s research and teaching should situate French and Francophone culture in a transnational framework and address colonization. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in digital humanities and visual culture. Candidates with a focus on ecocriticism or gender studies are also encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates will be interested in working in a collaborative environment in a small liberal arts college setting. Applicants must have native or near native command of French (this includes all its varieties: European, Caribbean, North American, African, etc.) and should have completed all Ph.D. requirements by August 2023. Candidates must show evidence and/or promise of excellence in teaching students from diverse backgrounds and have an active research agenda. We are seeking outstanding teachers with demonstrated experience in teaching French language at all levels in an immersive environment. The successful candidate will be expected to teach elementary and intermediate language courses, as well as upper-level content-oriented courses, and contribute regularly to the college-wide curriculum, including the first-year seminar program and winter term curriculum. Ability to teach in English and interest in cross-departmental collaboration in Middlebury’s Black Studies Program is also highly desirable.

The Ph.D. offers two major concentrations: 1.) Literary and Cultural Studies and 2.) Critical Studies of Language/Linguistics. Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Black French Studies. Rice University’s Department of Modern and Classical Literatures and Cultures, in collaboration with the Center for African and African American Studies, seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Black French Studies. The successful candidate will have a research specialization in at least one of the following areas: post-1900 Francophone Africa; the Francophone Caribbean; cultures of migration in the Francophone Atlantic world; colonialism and democracy in French-speaking Africa and/or the Caribbean. Candidates with additional expertise in at least one of the following areas are strongly preferred: gender studies; postcolonial theory; history of slavery; visual culture and media studies. Candidates should have a strong teaching interest in Blackness in Francophone Africa.

Haitian Women’s Collective – Haiti Research and Policy Fellowship (Aug. 12, 2022)

Beginning this fall semester, we are seeking a quarter-time, year-long policy and research fellow to support the ongoing development of the advocacy infrastructure of the Haitian Women’s Collective. As a member of the Haiti Advocacy Working Group (HAWG), the Haitian Women’s Collective will sponsor a policy fellow as part of their membership participation.

This fellowship provides opportunities to learn and practice the skills of policy research and analysis, advocacy, and engagement with a particular focus on U.S. policy toward Haiti.

While the fellow will have significant autonomy in their work, they will work closely with HAWG leadership who will provide an enriching experience and access to outside experts and resources. A fellow can expect mentoring and training in skills desirable in any policy-based office. The fellowship will include a stipend.

Haitian and African American Connections Project Assistant Internship (July 15, 2022)

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. One  of its foundational pillars is to help all Americans see how their stories, their histories, and their  cultures are shaped and informed by global influences. One sphere of global influence is the long established and deeply rooted artistic and cultural intersections between Black Americans and  Haitians. The museum has an interest in developing a project that explores these connections and is  offering an internship in association with the planning of this initiative. Rooted in the models set by  the cultural exchanges and artistic productions that emerged out of the Harlem Renaissance period in  the United States and the indigenism period in Haiti, this initiative will consider where these  connections exist today and the synergies that historically and contemporaneously allow them to  flourish and be sustained. The initiative will draw from a wide cross-section of artistic genres  including music, literature, fashion, art, foodways, museum curation, and more.  

Call for HSA Digital Fellow

The Haitian Studies Association (HSA) is seeking a Digital Fellow to help expand and develop the Association’s digital platforms. The fellowship’s responsibilities include: Managing the HSA Open-Access Platform, a curated digital platform where HSA members can freely share and access their publications. Supporting the production and dissemination of public scholarship, including the creation of a Decolonizing Haitian Studies syllabus. Helping ensure that information is posted to social media in an effective and timely manner. Membership and participation in the HSA’s Growth and Futures committee. Other related duties as assigned.

The Department of French and Arabic invites applications for a one-year appointment in the literatures and cultures of French Caribbean and the African diaspora beginning Fall 2022. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible. 2021 Nominations for the H.S.A. Board (Student Representative)

There shall be a designated student member. The student representative will serve from January 2022 to December 2023 and will complete the three-year term of the previous student member who was only able to serve one year.  The nominee must have attended two out of the last five Haitian Studies Association Conferences and be a member in good standing and must demonstrate a potential for making contributions to the field of Haitian Studies. In the event that the student member is no longer a student, they will continue to serve as a board member until the next scheduled election. The student representative will receive an established and set stipend to attend the HSA annual meeting.
