HSA Emerging Scholars: The Mapou: Peer Support Groups
HAITIAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION
EMERGING SCHOLARS COMMITTEE
THE MAPOU: PEER SUPPORT GROUPS
THE MAPOU: PEER RASIN GROUPS seeks to hold space for any member of HSA to have the opportunity to build professional relationships that foster community, accountability, and career advancement/discernment. Mapou participants commit to joining a year-long rasin group that meets twice a semester and once in the summer (five total). Mapou meetings are structured around a set of questions that help move professionals toward the program goals of building intentional community, creating accountability, and supporting professional advancement.
The Mapou relies on an unwavering commitment to being in attendance and fully participating in assigned rasin groups. Participants are asked to commit to attending all 5 meetings with their rasin group and to communicate with their peers when they are unable to participate. All HSA members are encouraged to participate, regardless of tenure, race, age, gender, sexuality, or religious/spiritual practice, and should be willing to work towards forming an inclusive, decolonized rasin group.
