2025 Call for H.S.A. Award Nominations (Aug. 31, 2025)
The Haitian Studies Association welcomes nominations for the following 2025 awards.
Award for Excellence: This award honors a person or organization for their years of stellar contributions to the scholarship, literature, arts, or culture of Haiti.
Award for Service: This award recognizes a person or an organization for their years of dedication and service to the Haitian Studies Association, the field of Haitian Studies, or the people of Haiti.
Life Time Achievement Award: The HSA Life Time Achievement Award is given at no special interval to recognize the entirety of a person’s life achievement and his/her academic and professional contributions to the field of Haitian Studies.
Call for Applications: Emerging Scholars Award & The Michel-Rolph Trouillot Fund
The Emerging Scholars Committee of the Haitian Studies Association invites applications for the following 2025 awards. Award recipients will be honored at the 37th Annual Conference, “1825 | 2025: Restitisyon ak Reparasyon” in the University of Pittsburgh, PA, October 23-25, 2025.
We are also looking for graduate volunteers to help during our conference.
Call for Nominations: 2025 Haitian Studies Association Book Prize (May 28, 2025)
The Haitian Studies Association (HSA) is pleased to announce the 2025 HSA Book Prize, awarded biennially to an outstanding scholarly monograph that offers a rigorous analysis and original perspective on Haitian society, culture, and history. The prize aims to recognize exceptional contributions to the field of Haitian Studies.
Restitution & Reparation: An Invitation to Respond to HSA’s Call (Apr. 1, 2025)
In this webinar, HSA Program and Conference Planning committee members will discuss the many possible responses to the 37th annual conference call for papers. Panelists will discuss the theme of restitution and reparation from multiple perspectives, demystify the submission process for emerging scholars and clarify guidelines for volunteer reviewers. Please join us for the first of many conversations to mark the bicentennial of the 1825 indemnity.

H.S.A.’s 37th Annual Conference – Call for Proposals (Apr 21, 2025)
The Haitian Studies Association considers the interconnected themes of restitisyon [restitution] and reparasyon [reparation] to mark the bicentennial of the 1825 indemnity France imposed on Haiti as retribution for its political independence and the liberation of its people.
We welcome submissions that engage historical calls for reparative justice for plantation slavery, its legacies, and more recent calls for restitutive measures for state finances taken in exchange for recognition of Haitian sovereignty. Multidisciplinary approaches to reparation and restitution, highlighting Haitian refusals, resistance, and defense of independence, will contribute to our arrival at a future rooted in Haitian epistemologies and self-determination.

“The Rights To Live Creatively,” On Gender & Sexuality In Haitian Studies (Oct. 12, 2024)
The Sexualities Working Group is a group of Haitian and U.S. American scholars and practitioners who have, since 2015 in different configurations, mobilized in coalition with Haitian LGBTQ/M-community, Vodouyizan, and all those who do not conform to sexual/gendered norms. Working in collaboration and coalition, we are dedicated to documenting, sharing, and bolstering the work of queer crusaders and all those who dare to live creatively in Haiti and its diasporas. We assemble around forms of creativity across arts and activisms, political and cultural expressions, history-making and future-birthing. We are interested in different domains of knowledge production and activism that might register, resist, and/or repair the dire impacts on gendered/sexual formations caused by systemic violence, cis-hetero-patriarchy, homophobia/transphobia, religious vitriol, and neoliberal policies. We ask, how does close attention to the lived body and embodied expression illuminate gender/sexuality as foundational to a capacious sense of the rights to live creatively? What pedagogies and praxes have served to either forward or derail the possibilities for life in Haiti? In what ways do Haitian people seize joy, create pleasures, and rest amidst confinement?
Keynote Speaker: Sabine Lamour ‘La Formation Des Piliers Strategiques Du Mouvement Feministe Haïtien’ (Oct. 11, 2024)
Le mouvement féministe haïtien a émergé à partir des réactions graduelles et en chaine, un processus que les femmes ont exprimées dans la vie politique de leur pays et même au niveau international afin de répondre aux oppressions qui avaient notamment affecté leur vie. Une approche archéologique et constructiviste permet de retracer les réponses qu’elles ont étalées dans le temps ainsi que la maturation de leur mouvement. À partir de là, il est possible de saisir les fondements philosophiques de la prise de parole des femmes en fonction des situations qui les obligent à réagir jusqu’au point où elles sont parvenues à constituer une approche cohérente de leurs actions sur la scène politique haïtienne.
Standing Up: A Workshop on Writing Op-Eds and Writing Policymakers (Oct. 10, 2024)
Haiti and Haitians have been increasingly under attack this year, with uncorked and unfounded racism. US politicians have weaponized this anti-Haitianism; their baseless, bad-faith claims have incited vigilante groups to commit acts of physical violence and to make bomb threats against Haitian immigrants. Meanwhile the situation in Haiti remains precarious, with minimal impact from UN troops. Join a supportive group of colleagues for a workshop, facilitated by public scholars with decades of experience making change, where we will explore concrete ways to to take action, from writing to policymakers to penning op-eds for local and national newspapers.
