2022 Digital Book Launch

As we come together this year, we are showcasing titles published after our last in-person conference. So in keeping with the times, the Haitian Studies Association introduces our Digital Book Launch to display these new books in a more user-friendly format for your convenience. The following list includes books published during the pandemic and early 2022, including the forthcoming books closing out this year. This list of 60+ books includes texts written both in English and French. The books below address various issues and articulate different perspectives on Haiti and Haitian national history. 2022 Annual Conference Keynote Speaker: Dr. Jemima Pierre

This year, the Haitian Studies Association is honored to feature the distinguished scholar, Dr. Jemima Pierre, as the 2022 keynote speaker for our 34th annual conference. Her presentation, “Fugitives of Empire: Haiti and the Paradoxes of Marronage,” will revisit both the history and theoretical usages of “maroonage” as a way of understanding the contemporary predicaments and paradoxes of Haiti in the wider world. Focusing on questions of migration, it will provoke a conversation around questions of imperialism, sovereignty, fugitivity, and borders.

Virtual Advocacy Training – Using your power to positively influence U.S. foreign policy (Oct. 6, 2022)

For starters—what is policy advocacy and how is it different from, and complementary to, political activism? How can you leverage your power to influence U.S. foreign policy toward Haiti? Moreover, working for justice on any issue, including through policy advocacy, is an exhausting process, as so many different issues are pressing for our time and attention. Learn how to craft an advocacy strategy that also acknowledges the need for self-care and maintaining energy for long-term, effective engagement. Attendees will come away with best practices for advocacy and a deeper understanding of various advocacy tools and how to use them.

Call for Emerging Scholar Award Applications (Sept. 15, 2022)

The Emerging Scholars Committee of the Haitian Studies Association invites applications for the following 2022 awards. Award recipients will be honored at the 34th Annual HSA Conference in Washington, DC from October 7-9, 2022.
The following applications are due by September 15, 2022 for emerging scholars at the undergraduate and graduate levels, based in Haiti and internationally (per award criteria).
