Healing in the Lakou / Gerizon nan Lakou a (Sept. 30, 2025)

This virtual conversation bridges KOSANBA’s recent conference theme on “Africana Religious Activism, Resistance and Rejuvenation” and HSA’s forthcoming conference theme on “Reparasyon ak Restitisyon.” Together, we center the lakou as a seedbed and garden for Haitian epistemologies of collectivity, liberation, healing, and repair.

Dr. Cécile Accilien
Dr. Cécile Accilien is Professor of French and Francophone Studies in the School of Language, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Maryland (College Park). Her area of studies are Francophone African and Caribbean Literatures and Cultures, Gender & Sexuality Studies and Film & Media Studies. She has published in different journals including Forum for Inter-American Research, The Southern Quarterly: A Journal of the Arts in the South, Women, Gender & Families of Color, Revue française, and the Journal of Haitian Studies. She is the co-editor (with Valerie Orlando) of Teaching Haiti: Strategies for Creating New Narratives; co-author (with Krishauna Hines Gaither) of The Antiracism World Language Classroom and co-author (with Jowel Laguerre) of English-Haitian Creole Phrasebook. She recently published Bay lodyans: Haitian Popular Film Culture with SUNY Press. Since 2019 she has been serving as chair of the editorial board for Women, Gender and Families of Color. She served as the 2024 president of the Haitian Studies Association. Prior to that she served as an HSA board member from 2019-2022. She has written for Truthout and Latin American Commentator.
Iyalochá & Madre Nkisi Dr. Yanique Hume
Iyalochá & Madre Nkisi Dr. Yanique Hume is a scholar, dancer and choreographer who is Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of West Indies, Cave Hill, and President of KOSANBA, the Scholarly Association for the Study of Haitian Vodou. Dr. Hume’s research is constitutively interdisciplinary, sitting comfortably between the fields of the humanities and creative arts. She employs a multifaceted approach to cultural inquiry steeped in the traditions of cultural anthropology, cultural studies, comparative religion, performance studies and a critical dance practice. Dr. Hume is also the co-editor of Caribbean Cultural Thought: From Plantation to Diaspora (2013); Caribbean Popular Culture: Power,Politics and Performance (2016); and Passages and Afterworlds: Anthropological Perspectives on Death in the Caribbean (2018).
Manbo Dr. Kyrah Malika Daniels
Dr. Kyrah Malika Daniels is Assistant Professor of African American Studies at Emory University. Her first book (Art of the Healing Gods, Duke University Press) is a comparative religion project that examines sacred art objects used in healing ceremonies of Haiti and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her work has been published in the Journal of Africana Religions, the Journal of Haitian Studies, and the Journal for the American Academy of Religion. Daniels currently serves as Co Vice President for KOSANBA, the Scholarly Association for the Study of Haitian Vodou, and as a Leadership Council Member for the African and Diasporic Religious Studies Association (ADRSA).
