Emerging Scholars invites you to the relaunch of its Emerging Scholar’s Cafes on September 26, 2025 at 8pm CET/ 2pm EST/11am PST. This cafe brings Andry-Frestner Joseph of the Babes Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca of România into conversation with Mamyrah A. Douge-Prosper Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Studies and International Relations at UC Irvine. Joseph will present parts of his Master’s thesis research which critically examines how foreign interventions and the dominance of NGOs have weakened the Haitian government’s ability to implement effective public policies in rural areas, advocating for more inclusive and locally driven development approaches that empower rural families and align with sustainable development goals. His presentation will be followed by Douge-Prosper’s comments on his work.
Andy-Frestner JOSEPH
Andy-Frestner JOSEPH holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the Faculty of Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences (FSPAC), where he completed his thesis entitled “Rural Families and Public Policy vs the Global Development Agenda in a Developing Country – Case Study Cerca-la-source, Haiti”. Andy holds a degree in International Relations from the University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE) and is currently involved in several initiatives and research aimed at strengthening development in his hometown, Cerca-la-source. In addition to his academic pursuits, he is also an accomplished actor, known for his roles in The Long Song, Perejil and Jupia.
Mamyrah Douge-Prosper
Mamyrah Douge-Prosper an assistant professor of global and international studies at @ucirvine. Mamyrah specializes in research on social movements in the Caribbean and Latin America – particularly Black and Haitian social movements. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Haitian Studies, recently serving as co-editor for a special issue on Sexualities, NACLA, and Kalfou.
