Call for Applications: Emerging Scholars Award & The Michel-Rolph Trouillot Fund
The Emerging Scholars Committee of the Haitian Studies Association invites applications for the following 2025 awards. Award recipients will be honored at the 37th Annual Conference, “1825 | 2025: Restitisyon ak Reparasyon” in the University of Pittsburgh, PA, October 23-25, 2025.
Award: $750 stipend, and refund of registration & membership costs
Deadline: August 22th, 2025
Additionally, we are also looking for graduate volunteers to help during our conference.
The Michel-Rolph Trouillot Fund
The Michel-Rolph Trouillot Fund was started in 2012 to broaden participation in the Haitian Studies Association among academics, researchers, artists, intellectuals, and professionals who are based in Haiti and who do not have the possibility of traveling to the conference without financial assistance.
Due to the current barriers to securing visas from the US Embassy, for 2025 the Michel-Rolph Trouillot award will temporarily prioritize Haitian scholars based in Haiti or studying abroad as international students who have a visa or are otherwise able to travel within or to the United States to participate in the conference.
Criteria:
Priority will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria:
- Lack of other financial resources, which prevents them from participating in the HSA colloquium
- Their main residence is currently in Haiti OR (2025) Haitian nationals studying abroad as international students
- Their work goes along with the theme of the HSA conference
- They are attending the HSA conference for the first time
- They are interested in future participation with HSA
- They submitted an individual or one-session proposal to the HSA
Emerging Scholars’ Award
HSA established the Student and Emerging Scholars’ fund during the 2006 conference. Since 2008, the HSA board has earmarked $1000 annually to support student research and participation in our annual conference.
Two scholarships ($750 each) may be applied toward travel and accommodation expenses incurred for attending an HSA conference and/or presenting a specific research project concerning Haiti and/or the Haitian diaspora.
The award is intended to encourage undergraduate and graduate students to attend HSA’s annual conference and present their research. Applicants are eligible for the Emerging Scholars award once.
Eligibility:
- Full-time student
- Preferred GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent, for example B, 87.5/100)
- Demonstrate proof of past or current research on subjects related to Haiti and/or the Haitian diaspora
Application process for both scholarships:
- Complete and submit application form
- Biography (100-250 words)
- A personal statement (500-750 words)
- Unofficial transcript (Emerging Scholars’ Fund applicant only)
- Contact information of a reference familiar with your work
- Deadline: August 22th, 2025
Haitian nationals can apply to both awards, but can only be awarded one.
Students awarded with this scholarship will be asked to submit a copy of their final conference papers to HSA by the final day of the conference at the following address: EmergingScholars@haitianstudies.org.
Call for Graduate Student Volunteers
The Haitian Studies Association seeks 6 to 8 volunteers (compensated with registration & membership refund) to assist with running our 37th Annual Conference, “1825 | 2025: Restitisyon ak Reparasyon” in the University of Pittsburgh, PA, October 23-25, 2025.
The expectation is each volunteer will serve one shift each conference day (ex. 8am-12pm, 12pm-4pm). This would include handling registrations, helping with technology in rooms, and any other tasks needed.
