2017 Call for Nominations to the Board

Board of Directors

The members of the Board of Directors of the Haitian Studies Association are elected by the general membership at the annual conference and serve a three-year term. Board members can be re-elected for additional terms. The Board is comprised of elected and advisory members who, in turn, elect the officers of the board. The elected officers of the Board of Directors are the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Advisory Board is comprised of the current Executive Director, the immediate Past President, the Past Executive Director, and the Editor of the Journal of Haitian Studies (JOHS). Collectively, these members are the governing body of the Haitian Studies Association.

Responsibilities of Board Members

  • Be knowledgeable about and support the organization’s mission, services, policies, and programs
  • Support the Board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities
  • Attend all board and committee meetings and functions, which consist of the Annual Conference held either in October or November, as well as the Annual Board Meeting held every April – the location of both meetings varies in accordance with the location of the conference
  • Participate in periodical conference calls, which can vary depending on the committee and board work
  • Serve on standing and ad hoc committees or task forces, and offer to take on special assignments
  • Recruit members to and inform scholars about the Association
  • Seek candidates (for election to the Board) who can make significant contributions to the work of the Board and the Association
  • Keep up-to-date on major developments in Haitian Studies
  • Serve the full length of the three-year term

NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have been a member of HSA for three consecutive years
  • Must have attended 3 out of the last 5 Haitian Studies Association Conferences

NOMINATION PROCEDURES

All members of the Haitian Studies Association can enter a nomination. Self- nominations are also welcomed. Nomination materials should include a brief statement (400 words maximum) describing expertise, experience, and interest in Haitian Studies, a recent CV and a photo. The deadline for nominations is September 2, 2017. If you nominate someone other than yourself, please include that person’s consent to be nominated. Voting will take place at the upcoming conference to be held at Xavier University and Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA of 1- 4 November 2017. The newly elected Board Members will be announced at the business meeting at the conclusion of the conference. Please be alert for announcement about electronic balloting. HSA hopes to enable members to vote electronically before the conference as well as during the conference.
